Krown Jewels specializes in custom, keepsake, simple and statement jewelry. All pieces contain NO nickle or lead We strive to provide good quality pieces at affordable prices. Items are either gold plated or gold filled as an alternative to solid gold jewelry. Below is a breakdown of each.
Gold plated jewelry is jewelry made of a base metal (e.g. stainless steel, sterling silver or brass) that has a layer of gold applied to the surface through electroplating. Electroplating is the process of coating the base metal with a diluted solution of gold through electric current. Since the layer of gold is minimal, the colour on gold plated items will wear off over time. All of our gold plated items are varnished with a coating to help extend the wear of the gold plate.
Gold filled is an actual layer of gold pressure bonded to a base metal (in our case sterling silver). Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plating as filled has 100% more gold than gold plating (typically constituting at least 5% of the item's total weight). With PROPER CARE, gold filled will not tarnish. Anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry. Gold filled is the closest alternative to solid gold.
Tarnishing occurs when your piece comes into contact with things like liquids, humidity, pollutants in the air or acidity in your skin. This causes a chemical reaction that alters the colour of the plating. How long your piece lasts, depends on how well you take care of it. Jewelry is fragile and delicate. NO YOU CANNOT WEAR YOUR JEWELRY IN THE WATER! It is not a swimsuit. The ONLY jewelry you can wear in the water is solid gold and even then, you cannot wear it in chlorinated water. How long your piece lasts varies depending on how often the item is worn and how well it is cared for. The most important steps you can take to ensure a longer lasting finish are:
1. Avoid direct contact with any type of moisture, oil or perfume. Be mindful when spraying perfume while wearing necklaces.
2. After each use, gently wipe your piece with a soft cloth to remove any excess oil left from your skin. This step is very important as acidity levels in people's skin vary and affect the jewelry's finish
4. Store your pieces so that they do not rub against other surfaces.
5. Hang any pieces that contain chain and keep earrings and rings in the jewelry pouches.
